# Volume weight

## Volume weight

Airfreight, Road transport and Courier services are charged per kilo.
However, if goods in relation to their weight occupy a lot of space, the charge will be over the volume weight. This is often the case for bicycles and furniture.

The volume ratio is 1:6 or 1 metric ton 1000:6 = 166.66 kilo.
This means that 167 kilo should not exceed the space of 1 cubic meter.
If a consignment of bicycles and furniture has an actual weight of 167 kilo and takes space for 1.73 cubic meter. Consequently charge is over: 1.73M3 x 166.66 = 288 volume kilo.
WBS will establish which of the two are the highest (actual or volume weight).

Courier services
The volume ratio is 1:5 or 1 metric ton 1000:5 = 200 kilo.
This means that 200 kilo should not exceed the space of 1 cubic meter.
If a consignment has an actual weight of 200 kilo and takes space for 1.73 cubic meter, consequently the charge is over: 1.73M3 x 200 = 346 kilo volume weight.
WBS will establish which of the two are the highest (actual or volume weight).

Sea freight
The volume ratio is 1:1. 1 metric ton is equal to 1000 kilo.
The actual weight is needed as well, but in effect, sea freight is always calculated over the volume.

Volume calculator
On this website at the rate calculation for Airfreight, Sea freight, Road transport and Courier you can establish the volume by using the calculator. The volume is to be calculated over the total consignment, if you have more pieces with different dimensions, just add up the totals. The calculator will automatically calculate which weight is applicable.
